    Molten Core

    2010 - 04.22

First up: In what seems to be an inevitable turn of events, the moment I say “it’s not happening, it’s time for me to leave” there are signs of life within my current guild. There is a reply to the forum post! People are making noises in /g about current content. Perhaps Alas is right: “stick it in the diary and shout a lot” evidently worked for the MC run I talk about below. I’m still inclined to think that perhaps I might find a better raiding home elsewhere, but if nothing else it confirms that even in the corporeal world, Lady RNG never misses an opportunity to do something unpleasant to my cornflakes.

Yesterday the “legacy” raid previously mentioned turned out to be a Molten Core run. It was a little fragmented as level 80s don’t *need* to stick together in MC for safety. We had little splinter groups wandering off on occasion, but it would be fair to say that, until we reached Magmadar’s Cavern, the biggest difficulty we had was getting stragglers into the instance.

We came slightly unstuck in Magmadar’s Cavern. In here there are a several (5?) packs of corehounds. All of the corehounds within a pack must be killed within 10s, otherwise they “re-ignite” each other and come back to life. Of course none of *us* knew this, and the tendency for people to excitedly attack mobs at random, coupled with a healthy splash of overconfidence, meant we managed to pull *all* of the packs at once.

    Magmadar's Cavern:

Magmadar's Cavern. It's a bad idea to pull all of these at once unless you have hefty AoE.

Much confusion ensued. “They won’t die”. “Separate them out”. “Someone google it”. And so on.

After a period of whaling away with no result, a couple of us ran over to Magmadar (corehounds in tow) and killed him. Still the corehounds kept respawning. Our healers OOM’d, and died. I was fine on the health front (thank you, Seal of Light), but we weren’t making any progress. Then I made the stupid mistake of trying to find a solution for “oops, I’ve pulled the whole room” and looked back at my primary monitor in time to watch myself die. Clearly it was a good idea, as the rest of the group followed suit soon after.

We had a few dropouts at this point, but five of us were determined to kill the two remaining bosses so navigated our way back from the graveyard. Having leveled Centrella primarily through the dungeon finder means I’ve done my fair share of runs through BRD (including a few corpse runs) and the memory served me well on my run back in. A final sub-boss and a little RP later, we were able to spawn the final boss of Molten Core.

Hold on, I left my cigarettes in my other armour. At my mum's house. Ruuuuun.

Ragnaros is … large. And quite definitely on fire. And has an pair of irritating attacks which throw you around the room. The first time this happened I landed on top of a handy nearby pillar, jumped down, and carried on thwacking away at him. The second time it happened I was expecting the same … except I missed the pillar by scant inches and plopped down into the lava. This left me with a long run back around the path back to Ragnaros: so long that a single Hammer of Wrath was the only attack I made on my return.

All that remained was his mighty hammer.

    And that was that.
